About Homestays

If you are a college student coming to the U.S. to study, consider staying with a welcoming host family!   A homestay will give you many chances to practice English, make new friends and participate in daily family life.  Andeo provides homestays for students attending colleges and universities in the Portland/Vancouver area. Students must be over 18 years old when they begin their homestays.

YOUR HOMESTAY WILL INCLUDE:

  • Airport Pickup - Portland International Airport (PDX)
  • A carefully screened family that is ready to welcome you into their home and include you in their daily lives.
  • A comfortable private room with access to a study area.
  • Meals (self-serve breakfast for all programs. The "Classic" option also includes self-serve lunch an an evening dinner with the family).
  • A home that is close to public transportation. The typical bus commute is 20 to 60 minutes.
  • Information about your host family prior to your arrival in Portland; upon arrival, you will also receive orientation materials, and an ID card that lists your host family information and our office contact number.
  • Andeo staff members who will be available throughout your stay to help you get the most out of your homestay experience.

A few families have two or more rooms available for hosting international students. As a general rule, students who speak the same native language are not placed together in a homestay.

Like most cities in the United States, Portland has a diverse population. This diversity among people is very well represented by our host families. Your host may be a single adult, male or female, a single parent with children, a couple with or without children, or a retired person. They may be of European, Asian, African or mixed descent, and may or may not practice a religion. While we will do our best to accommodate requests regarding pets and dietary restrictions, we cannot guarantee placement with a particular type of family. We encourage you to be open to experiencing our society's diversity and learning about it from your host family.

HOST FAMILY SCREENING PROCESS
Every host family goes through a careful screening process. We review their host family application, check three references, and interview them in their home. You will be placed in a comfortable home with a welcoming family that is ready to share their culture with you.
