Frequently Asked Questions

How can we sign up to host?
To start, complete the Host Family Application online.  The information about your family, your hobbies and your pets helps us when matching you with a student. We will review your application, contact your three references and arrange a family interview in your home.  The interview is a great time for you to ask questions, let us know about your hosting preferences, and learn more about our programs.

Do we have a choice about the student we host?
Of course! Let us know your preferences regarding nationality, age, gender and program type. We will do our best to select a student who matches your family’s requests and interests. The final decision to host is always yours!

Will our student speak some English?
Yes, and they really want to practice and improve their English! The students’ skill levels vary depending on their age, nationality and prior experience with the language. In general, students who choose an Immersion Program are able to communicate in English better than those who choose a Study Program. However, since students on the Study Programs are studying English every day, they often improve rapidly and bring home fun, interactive homework to share with their host family.

What is the difference between an Immersion Program and a Study Program?
Students who choose an Immersion Program do not have any organized classes or group activities. They are “immersed” in the host family’s daily life and activities. Students who choose a Study Program also live with a host family but have classes and activities on weekdays. Activities may include local sightseeing trips, volunteer opportunities and sports events.

Can we host more than one student at a time?
You can host more than one student at a time as long as the students don’t speak the same native language. The exception is that some students on our Study Programs ask to share a homestay with a friend from their group, so they can commute to school together. Even though these friends speak the same language, they still want to speak English at home with their host family.

Can our student join us on vacation?
In general, yes!  Teens on the Summer Immersion Programs are free to adjust to your schedule, so they can join in your vacation plans without a problem.  Students who come on programs that include weekday classes or activities can usually miss a day or two to join a short trip.

Does our student need a separate bedroom?
Teens can share a bedroom as long as they have their own bed and their “roommate” is of the same gender and close in age. College students do need their own bedroom, though they can share a room if they have asked to share a homestay with a friend from their group.

Will we receive any orientation materials?
Yes! You will receive information about your student’s home culture and other materials specific to the program you have chosen. We also send our new host families a handbook that covers topics such as communication tips, planning activities, chores, meals, spending money, cultural adjustment and student insurance. And you will receive staff contact information, including a 24-hour emergency number.

What if our student is injured or becomes ill during the homestay?
All students are covered by medical and accident insurance. Coverage is comprehensive, except for eye and dental care (unless required as the result of an accident). The application form for minors includes a medical release formed signed by their parent/guardian. In case of illness or accident, we ask you to treat your student like your own child and act accordingly. If there is a serious problem, families should contact us as soon as possible so we can keep the student’s parents informed.

What if a problem comes up?
If you have any problems or questions, just give us a call! We send our contact information in the host family orientation packet, including a 24-hour emergency number. We want students and families to have a successful and rewarding homestay experience, and we do everything possible to help facilitate this goal.
