Can our student join us on vacation? In general, yes! Teens on the Summer Immersion Programs are free to adjust to your schedule, so they can join in your vacation plans without a problem. Students who come on programs that include weekday classes or activities can usually miss a day or two to join a short trip.
Does our student need a separate bedroom? Teens can share a bedroom as long as they have their own bed and their “roommate” is of the same gender and close in age. College students do need their own bedroom, though they can share a room if they have asked to share a homestay with a friend from their group.
Will we receive any orientation materials? Yes! You will receive information about your student’s home culture and other materials specific to the program you have chosen. We also send our new host families a handbook that covers topics such as communication tips, planning activities, chores, meals, spending money, cultural adjustment and student insurance. And you will receive staff contact information, including a 24-hour emergency number.
What if our student is injured or becomes ill during the homestay? All students are covered by medical and accident insurance. Coverage is comprehensive, except for eye and dental care (unless required as the result of an accident). The application form for minors includes a medical release formed signed by their parent/guardian. In case of illness or accident, we ask you to treat your student like your own child and act accordingly. If there is a serious problem, families should contact us as soon as possible so we can keep the student’s parents informed.
What if a problem comes up? If you have any problems or questions, just give us a call! We send our contact information in the host family orientation packet, including a 24-hour emergency number. We want students and families to have a successful and rewarding homestay experience, and we do everything possible to help facilitate this goal.
