Homestay FAQs for College Students

Will someone pick me up from the airport?
Yes, a member of your host family or an ANDEO staff person will meet you at Portland International Airport. Please send us your flight information as soon as possible. Include the name of your airline, flight number, date, and time of your arrival in Portland.

How are ANDEO host families chosen?
Every host family goes through a careful screening process. We review their host family application, check three references, visit their neighborhood, and interview them in their home. ANDEO has more than 27 years of experience coordinating homestays for international students. You will be placed in a comfortable home with a welcoming family that is ready to share their culture with you.

Will I know who my host family is before I arrive?
If you apply at least 30 days before you plan to arrive in Portland, we will send you information about your host family at least one week before your arrival date. It will include their names and their contact information as well as details about their pets, hobbies, occupations and family members.

Will I have my own bedroom?
Yes. The homestay program includes a private room.

Will I have my own bathroom?
Most students share a bathroom with at least one other family member.

Where can I do my homework?
You will have a place to work and study in your home. It could be a desk in your room or a shared space elsewhere in the house. Your host family will show it to you when you arrive?

Will the home have internet access?
Yes, all homes have high-speed internet access. We suggest that you bring your own computer for school and private use.

Will there be pets in the home?
About 90% of our families have at least one pet. Cats and dogs are the most common. If you are allergic to cats or dogs, please write that on your application and we will place you with a family without pets. If you are not allergic to pets, we encourage you to be flexible about staying with a family with pets. Pets will not come into your room unless you want them to!

Where will I eat my meals?
Your host family will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. In most homes, you will prepare your own breakfast and lunch. Your host family will show you where you can find the food and how to use the kitchen appliances. On most evenings, you will eat dinner with your host family. This is a great opportunity to learn about American culture and to practice your English! Many host families enjoy cooking for their students. Many students also like to share their culture by cooking for their hosts, too!

I cannot eat pork and prefer Halal meats. Will my family respect this?
Yes, please write this on your application form. Many ANDEO families have hosted Muslim students and are familiar with their dietary needs. They will respect your requests regarding pork or other dietary restrictions. Portland has several Halal markets and your family will help you purchase Halal meats. However, you will be asked to pay half of the cost of these specialty items.

How will I get to school?
You will use public transportation. Portland has a very good bus and train system, and we choose host families that live close to a station. For most students, it takes 30-45 minutes to go from their home to the campus.

What can I do if I have a question or a problem?
You can always contact ANDEO. We are here to help you have a great time in the USA, and we have over 28 years of experience in working with students and host families.

Do you have information in my language, too?
We are working on it. You can read the program rules in Japanese, Chinese, Korean, or Arabic, and you can also email us in Japanese at info(at)andeo.org.

When should I apply for a homestay?
We recommend that you apply for a homestay as soon as possible, and at least 30 days before you plan to arrive in Portland. If you apply less than 30 days before your arrival date, we will do our best to help you but we cannot guarantee that you will be place with a host family by the time you arrive. You may need to stay at a hotel or youth hostel in the area.
