What is the New Zealand high school system like? Most high schools in New Zealand are public and co-educational, though there are also a number of private schools. The schools are modeled on the British educational system and are generally more formal than the average U.S. school. A school uniform is required for most schools. The average cost of a new uniform is $160-$400, but some exchange students are able to buy used uniforms at a lower cost. The New Zealand academic year begins at the end of January and for most schools is divided into four terms: Term I, January to March; Term II, April to June; Term III, July to September; Term IV, October to December. Each term is approximately ten weeks long, and there are two-week vacations between terms. Schools usually begins at 8:30 am and finishes at 3:30 pm with an hour break for lunch.
Most high school students in New Zealand study English, history/geography, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. Additional subjects may include drama/art, economics, computer studies, woodworking, home economics, Maori studies, photography and foreign languages. Additional subjects vary from school to school and some require an additional fee. Most exchange students are placed in the 6th or 7th Form (equal to a Junior or a Senior in a U.S. high school), where they will take five subjects. Depending on the availability of subject and class size, you may be able to choose some subjects you would like to take.
